Yumekui Meri, Yumeji Fujiwara, is an average high school student with the ability to see auras around people that allow him to predict what kind of dream he will have. Sadly, in their dreams they are often chased by cats with weapons led by John Doe, who claims that they need Yumeji’s body to enter the real world. However, everything changes when he meets the mysterious Mira Nightmare.
Meri Nightmare is the main heroine of the show. He is a dream demon who guards the door connecting the dream world to the real world. And unlike other dream demons, who require a human to enter the real world, as he has a body of his own. Her job was to guard the border between the two worlds, but for reasons unknown, she ended up with amnesia 10 years earlier in the real world. She wanders around looking for a way to return to the dreamland, and one faithful day, she meets Yumeji, who wants to help her get back home. She is initially hesitant, but after a daydream in which she saves Yumeji’s life, she accepts his help. However, Mira’s presence in the real world means that the barrier between dreams and reality is wide open, and not all dreaming demons who come to Earth are peaceful.
The Dream Eater mixes the mundane with the marvelous; It takes a well-used anime trope, a cast of familiar and comforting characters, and weaves it into the fantastic and quirky. The result is a heartwarming story filled with ups and downs, friendship, and an overall change in the perception of what a dream is. The quality of animation and the musical soundtrack coupled with its stunning visuals further enhance its appeal – Yumekui Meri is one of the best anime after Black Rock Shooter.
