Shonen Jump has released some great manga that would eventually be adapted into anime like Death Note, My Hero Academia, and Bleach. Released in 2004, Bleach was an instant success introducing the seemingly normal Ichigo Kurosaki who would eventually become the Soul Reaper and change the world of anime forever. Sadly, the anime of Bleach would run into a few issues and end prematurely in 2012 after 366 episodes and we anime fans never thought we would see the end of the series except for the continuation of the manga, which has its own history. There is a legend in you. Now in 2022, Bleach is back in a new arc, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War thanks to Studio Pierrot! Ichigo and his allies are facing a new threat, but let’s say it right away, this latest season is one of the best anime we’ve seen this year, if not the last decade. What is Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War and why should you jump back into the world of Bleach? Find out in our full review of Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War!
No time wasted. Battle time!

We discussed this in a previous article but we were really worried that Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War would end in tons of repetition and unnecessarily long flashbacks. While there are a few flashbacks throughout its 13 episodes, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War barely has any recaps and even goes so far as to recap older seasons without spending minutes on explicitly showing off the old anime series. Clever uses fuzzy-like memory sequences. Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War may only be 13 episodes long, but each episode advances our story by introducing a new enemy or piece of history/relationship never before seen in the world of Bleach. By the end, you’ll feel as though Studio Pierrot has learned from previous seasons of Bleach – and other Shonen Jump series – by focusing on a consistent story and be sure to keep your eyes on each new episode. Learning more about the Quincies, the Soul Society, Ichigo and his parents’ pasts, and seeing new characters—good and bad—constantly intrigued us and made us realize just how big the world of Bleach really is.
Death, carnage, and loss…

Warning! Spoiler ahead!
Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War has senseless deaths! By the mid-point of the series, when our newest enemy Yhwach and his army show up, several captains die and we lose one of the nicest old men in anime, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, who goes off with quite a bang. goes out with Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War doesn’t shy away from delivering a lot of violence this season – more so than the original – and even kills Soul Reapers. Unlike many anime that use death as a means of shock value, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War’s high death count actually moves many of the characters. Shunsui Kyoraku, the laid-back Soul Reaper who always seemed very relaxed, now has big positions to fill as the new head captain of the Soul Reapers. We still know the story of Ichigo’s mother and why she died… that revelation left us a little freaked out, even though we read the manga!
stellar animation, seriously

In 2004, Studio Pierrot did an incredible job with Bleach. Yes, it went through a number of design changes—which were noticed by fans—but the fight scenes were always stunning and had a distinctiveness to the world of Bleach. 2022’s Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, however, is on a whole new level and possibly Pierrot’s best animation yet. From the advanced character designs to the visual effects—to when the Head Captain uses his bankai… just wow—Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War continually blew our minds. The final scene – big spoilers here again – where Ichigo builds his new Zanpakuto is a scene we want to watch over and over again! Bleach: The Thousand Year Blood War may be Bleach but throw out whatever issues you had with the original because this is a new experience in every shape and form!
the enemy we needed

Bleach has had its fair share of enemies and so far, one of our favorites – and many of yours as well – is Sosuke Aizen. Once a Soul Reaper, Aizen was an absolute evil threat in the world of Bleach, but we think the new foe we mentioned earlier, Yhwach, is the worst. As Quincy’s father, Yhwach is an absolute rogue who kills his subordinates for not talking the right way or for showing “weakness”. Yhwach even allowed one of his subordinates to fight the Head Captain, knowing there would be no way for him to win. We’ve barely scratched the surface on The Thousand Years’ Blood War and now there’s more to Yhwach. For 13 episodes, we saw Bleach and possibly one of the coolest and scariest villains ever to be born in anime.
