A few months ago, we reviewed a manga called Yokohama Kaidashi Kiku. This is a manga that depicts a dystopian future, but in a chill and sane way. At the time, we thought it was a nice change of pace from the usual hectic and depressing nature of this genre. It was a novelty, so to speak.

Little did we know that we would soon be coming across another manga with a similar premise to Yokohama called Touring After the Apocalypse. So we reviewed that too, not knowing that a new trend had apparently just started. Because now, we are about to review another equally chill post-apocalyptic manga. It’s called doomsday with my dog. So let’s see how it fares against its predecessors.

As the name suggests, this manga is about a teenage girl wandering through ruined Japan with her beloved Shiba dog Haru. The girl’s name is never disclosed, so we only know her as Haru’s mentor. However, since the animals in this story can talk like regular humans, not knowing the name of Haru’s owner actually proves that the center of the story is Haru, the Shiba Inu.

Anyway, the story mainly deals with the two of them roaming around and talking about all kinds of things whenever and wherever they feel like it. In addition, Haru also likes to make philosophical statements and arguments towards his master, such as whether or not one can change for the better or futile pursuits. Needless to say, whenever Haru goes into these highly logical and disturbing rants, his boss always twitches at his fluffy cheeks.

Throughout their journey, they never meet another human being. However, there are lots of dogs (some of them are Shiba Inus like Haru), supernatural beings (such as a river goddess, a fox spirit, a kappa, etc.), and even an old alien. There is also a couple who decided to come to earth and become farmers. So yeah, you can expect to see a lot of weird stuff in this manga that will leave you scratching your head and smiling.

Why you should read Sekai no Owari ni Shiba Inu (Doomsday with My Dog)

1. A Wholesome and Redemptive Story

As you can see from the short summary above, there are a lot of strange things happening in Doomsday With My Dog. Talking animals, aliens, kappas, mermaids and many other strange creatures live in this world. And the reason behind those strange characters is never explained in the story. Haru and his boss just accept and interact with all those characters like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

So why is it so? Well, the answer is simply because that’s what the author wanted. In a nice note at the end of the volume, the author explains that this manga is a melting pot of everything he considers fun and interesting. Because of this, it’s actually a lot more interesting to leave things unexplained than to try to justify every little decision behind every event and character.

What’s more, it is also quite free in a way for both the writer and the reader. Because with this approach, the author can create any wacky situation involving any number of wacky characters whenever he feels like it. Thanks to this, readers get to enjoy lots of funny and unexpected interactions between Haru, his master, and other interesting characters they meet throughout their journey.

2. Bite-Sized Entertainment

This manga is 4-coma, meaning that a particular story is told in just four vertical panels. Like a comic strip in newspapers. This means that you will get a faster version of any particular event or conversation. And while each panel is clearly told in a sequential manner, a new set of 4-comas is rarely a continuation of the previous set, meaning each set is basically its own interesting little story.

This means you can basically read this manga from any set of 4-coma, and you’ll be able to jump right into the story. You can stop wherever you like, and you won’t feel the need to return to the story right away. After all, there’s no such thing as a cliffhanger here. So in a way, this manga is a collection of bite-sized entertainment that you can enjoy whenever you want. Got ten minutes to kill? Just read a few pages of Doomsday With My Dog, and you’re good to go.

Although to be fair, this type of story is not typical for this manga. Each 4-coma has the advantage of being a small size of recreation. What sets Doomsday With My Dog apart from the rest, however, is its density. Almost every set of 4-comas in this manga can provide you with interesting information (like the meaning of the suspension bridge effect), hilarious situations (meeting a polite French-speaking gorilla), and cute pictures (close-up of Haru) Is. face), all at the same time.

Why You Should Quit Sekai no Owari ni Shiba Inu (Doomsday with My Dog)

1. Lack of story development

We’ve talked about the advantages of Doomsday With My Dog being a 4-coma, so now it’s time to talk about one of its biggest weaknesses: the lack of story development. There is no mention of any sort of motivation or goal behind the characters’ decisions. As such, there isn’t even any character development to speak of.

Once you know some of the tropes shown by the characters, you can predict what they will do in any given situation. For example, we can open any random page of this manga and expect Haru to be spewing some random philosophical concept and his boss will be twitching his fluffy cheek because of it. So in a way the story is predictable and formulaic.

Doomsday With My Dog is an entire manga about a girl and her shiba dog who travel around ruined Japan. There are a lot of unanswered questions and bizarre turns of events in this manga, but that’s really part of its charm. After all, its main goal is to make you smile with comedy and melt your heart with the cuteness of Haru the Shiba Inu. If it looks like something you would enjoy, don’t hesitate to try this manga out.
