It really is a big summer of cinema for anime fans in the UK and Ireland. thank you good people anime ltd His latest cinematic offering will be Fortune Favor Lady Nikuko Which hit the screens around the UK and Ireland on Wednesday 10 August 2022.
We really enjoyed the film and suggest you catch it on the big screen, but that’s all, read our review to find out why we think it’s worth your time.
Fortune Favor Lady Nikuko is the latest cinematic outing from Studio 4°C. It is a slice of life story that focuses on the adventures of the titular character Nikuko and her daughter Kikuko. They live together in a port city. Nikuko is affectionately known as the Meat Lady because of her work at the Grill Bar. She is a larger than life character, both literally and figuratively. He is one of those local celebrities that everyone in the city knows about.
The film explores Nikuko through the lens of his daughter, who sets up the scene and tells the audience how they came to live in a port city. We are told that Nikuko has the sweetest heart and this often leads to her downfall in what many would consider poor life choices. She easily falls for men and is often taken advantage of by bullies.
In short the film is a chalk and cheese story. Nikuko is silly, flamboyant and loud, tends to gossip a lot and is constantly punished poorly, while Kikuko is a more regular teenage girl who wants to enjoy a game of basketball during her breaks.
The film is fun and playful and gets the right tone. It’s colorful and captivating, but also light hearted. We have a great cast of characters that just seem right for a good easy-going slice of life.
The animation is at a consistently high standard with lots of details on set in the city. Keep an eye out for some hints for Totoro too! There are memories about the delicious looks of anime food and this movie adds to that circle. After watching it, you’ll have a strong urge to have thick French toast for breakfast or large chunks of tender grilled meat for an evening meal.
The film also has a quirky tone that comes up over and over again with some supporting animal characters! Watch out for the Neon Lizard, the Penguin, and the Grizzled Ginger Cat (who should have gotten more screen time). The cicadas also voiced their disappointment, adding for the weird extra laughs.
The only issue with the film is the portrayal of Nikuko himself, where the fat person being fat is the punch line of many jokes. The screen presence emphasizes her being fat and this is used to make her laugh at her expense. Although he has full character development, so it’s a bit troubling. You can explain this fat shaming. It seems like 20 years ago, not really from now.
I’ve seen this movie twice now, once at the screening and again for this review, so the movie has rewatch value. There are little details that you can see in another scene.
Overall Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko is a well animate trait with lots of fun to be had. I highly recommend it if you want to ignore its one problem around body image.
