Let’s get one thing out of the way—Ghee-chan! Ecchi is the type of comedy you’re reading purely just for the sake of direct fan service. If you’re not interested in under-dressed girls of dubious ages, Gehi-chan! Not going to be your cup of tea; But if you enjoy sly humor and loli-style characters, Gahi-chan! Provides a foolproof base that’s luscious. If you are a fan of more mature series like Yuragi-so no Yuna-san (Yuna and the Haunted Hot Springs) or Sundome!! There’s a lot of bright yukai love in the galaxy, Gahei-chan! Join us today on Honeys Anime as we discuss Gahi-chan!, Volume 1!

discussion time
The main premise behind Gahi-chan! Simple-fighting mangaka Kurehito Higa finds his life crumbling when a yukai (a supernatural creature) appears naked at his door and demands to be with him. This particular yukai is a ‘gahi’ – a creature described in classical Chinese tales, and is best guessed in Western culture as a skin-walker. Gee-chan! In the U.S., a gharial can eat a picture and “wear” the skin of that picture for a limited time, before returning to an obscure octopus-shaped monster form. After getting some of Higa’s manga, a gihi adopts the personality of the manga’s main character, Ruki, and decides that she wants to be with Higa because she likes his pictures, and she wears Ruki’s skin. enjoys wearing. The comedic beats—and achy moments—practically write themselves after that. Rookie is disappointed in everything, but her overwhelming passion (and lovable charm) shakes up Higa’s dreary life. There’s also a bit of body-horror humor added to it, as Rookie can’t hold her shape for long, and reverts to her normal yukai form in all the bad moments. Throw in a little landowner (also a fat loli-shaped girl) and one of Rookie’s friends (a ghi who related Higa is a closet spoiler), and you have the perfect setup for an enjoyable first volume. . Artistically, Tirotata manages to strike a fine balance between chaotic humor, with condescending fan service and clean linework. It’s also worth noting that the first volume is surprisingly long, for a total of 10 chapters, with two bonus chapters in the tankbon version, at over 180 pages, a nice surprise!
1. Ecchi Humor, Just a Little Restrained
As we mentioned earlier, Gahi-chan! Knows his target audience well. There’s definitely a huge market for acchi humor and beautifully drawn girls and Gahi-chan! Slots nicely into that space, with a fair amount of careful restraint on the part of the mangaka. You can expect a lot of boob-groping and casual-crotch-face-planting, but Tirotata strays away from anything more adult-rated than exposed nipples and panty-shots. If you want a manga you can (somewhat) safely leave around the house, Gahi-chan! (Probably) you won’t get as hot water as, say, sundome!! Milky Way or Shumatsu no Haremu (Worlds and Harem).
2. Small girl, Oppai included
We are not judging anyone here at Honey’s anime. If it’s not hurting anyone, you’re free to enjoy whatever you want. Gee-chan! There’s a roster of young girls willing to constantly make fun of themselves for being there, and makes a lot of self-referential jokes about their “oppai loli” appearance (not on office WiFi at Google, folks). Again, this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but Gahi-chan will have artwork and characterization! Works wonderfully for little girls with big assets and even big celebrities. Tirotata knows exactly what they’re dealing with, and pulls it off with style.

1. All Com, No Rome
We’re not going to criticize Gahi-chan! What it takes to be—a self-indulgent Ecchi monster-girl-fest—but in comparison to some of its contemporaries, Gahi-chan! Direct plot inspiration is grossly lacking. Recent series such as Height Kudasai, Takamine-san (Please Put Them On, Takamine-san) have proved that the openly ecchi series can carry a compelling narrative at the same time. There’s no need to draw a line between “fan service” and “story”—there’s a way to incorporate both to create a series that exists beyond mere Ecchi, but sadly, Gahi-chan! misses the mark. It’s not a deal breaker, but for us, it’s a missing piece of the puzzle.
final thoughts
Dumb, dumb, ecchi reads exist for a reason—to amuse. They don’t need to be anything other than pure entertainment for the specific audience they are intended for. Gee-chan! The little monster promises big boobs on girls, and it delivers in style. I wish Gahi-chan had some more essence! Beyond the central premise, but it’s a delectable slice-of-life ecchi nonetheless. Are you going to watch Gahi-chan!, Volume 1? Tell us in the comments below, and as always, thanks for reading!
