Story
Our story takes place in the Heian period, a time when demons roamed the land.
Jealousy, resentment, and envy—the darkness of man’s heart—brought the demons who attacked those who gave birth to them.
Taking this situation most seriously, the emperor ordered a great onmyoji, Kamo no Tadayuki, to annihilate the demons in the capital. Kamo no Tadayuki gathered gifted children from all over Japan and trained them as onmoji to ward off demons. Soon, two young men emerged from among his numerous disciples who stood head and shoulders above the rest.
Their names were Abe no Semi and Ashiya Doman.
However, Abe no Semei’s detractors whispered that his powers were the result of being born from the spirit of a fox. And Ashiya Doman was isolated because of his ability to use monk techniques, because at the time, monk and onmoji were bitter rivals.
The more demons he killed, the more people avoided him. Only Minamoto no Raiko, the famous general who defeated Shuten-dji at Mount Oye, was ready to defend him, both in public and private.
Then, one day, fox spirits started appearing in Kyoto.
Fox spirits were sacred animals that devoured demons, but they were also capable of swallowing men’s hearts. A man cannot defeat a fox. This is because when people fight, they create demons in their hearts. Same is the case with Onmoji. Onmyoji use demons to power their mantras. In this sense their method is to fight poison with poison. As such, not even an onmoji is able to overcome the spirit of the demon-eating fox. As soon as he tried, a demon would be born in his heart, and the fox would swallow him whole.
However, one day, Abe no Semi was able to kill the spirit of a fox. It cast an even deeper shadow on him. The people asked: “Isn’t that man a fox?”
introduction
High Reading is back for another year!
The performance marks the 5th anniversary of our recitations, which use a combination of music, technology and special effects.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the cast and crew, who have been working hard to prepare for this day, and our supportive audience.
With each successive performance, my collaboration with Toshiyuki Muranaka, our musician and a close friend of mine, has become more sophisticated and daring. With the employees who have helped make our vision come true, we have become more like a family than a team.
Working on stage to create these shows over the past five years has been an award in itself. These days, all the actors easily accept our offers even before the script is finalized. I am also grateful for the high expectations we are getting from our audience.
It’s been an incredible five years!
So, to celebrate our 5th anniversary, we wrote a new story.
So far, Reading High has focused mostly on Western stories, but this time around, we decided to set a story in Japan. What’s more, it takes place in the often revisited world of Onmoji…
However, I think our longtime fans know by now: Our story on Onmoji is different in more ways than one! It is a completely original work inspired by the kabuki play Aashiya Doman Ouchi Kagazi.
Our story is not about who has strong magic.
Rather, it is a story of the strength of the human heart.
Please enjoy the story of two young Onmoji before they were known as the Great Onmoji!
