Three seasons of Teasing Master Takagi-san aired between 2018 and 2022. They all follow a relatively similar formula, with some tweaks and improvements every new season, and yet fans can’t seem to get enough of this savvy series. So, even though we already had a remarkable third season in early 2022, TOHO Animation decided to spoil fans with another helping of this series as a feature film. This is the first Teasing Master Takagi-san movie review.

For third-year students like Takagi and Nishikata, the upcoming summer vacation will be their last in middle school. After that they have to think about their future. Close friends may go to a different high school, and some may even go to a better school in a bigger city. So, even though summer vacation has always been a joyous moment for these students, there is an unmistakable sadness in the air.
The same sentiments reside in the hearts of Takagi and Nishikata. Will this be their last summer vacation together? Will they be like friends till the end? Will everything change or will it remain the same? All these thoughts are heavy in their hearts.
As Takagi and Nishikata look for an excuse that will allow them to meet every day during this last summer vacation, they stumble upon an abandoned kitten. They immediately feel connected to this white bundle of cuteness. After spending a lot of time searching for the cat’s mother, to no avail, they decide to take care of it together. And so begins a summer that will decide the course of their lives forever.

1. A Simple and Heartwarming Story
Teasing Master Takagi-san has always taken pride in telling a simple and straightforward story. Even the set up and punchline are always the same. Nishikata challenges Takagi to a game he thinks he can win, and yet Takagi not only manages to figure out a way to defeat Nishikata, but teases and makes him blush.
And yet after three seasons and one movie, this simple formula still works like a charm. The healthy story will still warm your weary and weary heart. The film cemented teasing master Takagi-san’s immaculate reputation as one of the rare anime that you can always count on to bring a genuine smile to your face.
2. A Consistent and Impressive Story
Most episodes of Teasing Master Takagi-san consist of two or three short stories about Takagi and Nishikata’s pranks and challenges. It may sound formulaic and repetitive on paper, but as mentioned in the previous section, these episodes will never fail to warm your heart and make you smile.
However, he decided to do something different in this film. Instead of the usual episodic formula, the film instead tells a continuous narrative. This decision makes this film different from all the previous seasons, and it makes the story more impactful for the audience.
3. Great Character Development
To continue from the last point, the episodic nature of teasing Master Takagi-san can also be considered its biggest weakness. Because while this allows the series to present different good moments in each episode, it also prevents the story from giving any meaningful development to its characters.
The relentless nature of this film completely erases that issue. As we watch Takagi and Nishikata interact during the last summer of their middle school life, we finally see their development as characters. Instead of Takagi’s usual flirtatiousness, we can see him getting worried here. Instead of Nishikata’s general haste, we can also see her trying to steel herself and be brave.

1. Slow Romance
If there’s anything in this movie, or the entire Teasing Master Takagi-san catalog for that matter, that might put some anime viewers off, it’s the fact that it’s a slow-paced romance story. If you like a fast-paced story where everything develops in an instant, this may not be for you. Other than that, there really aren’t many bad things to be said about this film.
Teasing Master Takagi-san has always been a special nourishing series that can bring joy to your weary heart. This film is an improved version of the series. It tells an interesting, continuous story, offers a great character development, and yet delivers a healthy and heartwarming story. Even though this style of story may not be your cup of tea, we urge you to give this film a try.
