Full Story
Deer King is set in a medieval fantasy world. The kingdom of Zol has conquered the neighboring kingdom of Aquafa. Only Aquafa’s Fire Horse Territory is not under Zol’s control. The first wild dogs roamed Aquafa and carried a deadly disease called Black Wolf Fever that infected the people of Zoll. This was seen as a curse to protect Aquafa.
The story follows the adventures of Aquaphian Van, a massive hero and a man of few words. At first it is a bit jarring as we assume she is mute, but as the story heats up she is given more dialogues. While a slave in a salt mine, he meets the little girl Yuna. Everyone is attacked by wolves spreading deadly fever. Van and Yuna are the only survivors in search of a quiet life in the country. We know that is not going to happen as it is an action film and adventures are set to follow them.
Although the film marks Masashi Endo’s directorial debut, he is not new to the anime industry. He is a veteran who has worked on several Studio Ghibli Movies, Satoshi Kon works and Your Name. The film is exceptionally well animated, with fast-paced action and special effects where appropriate. Exactly what you would expect from a big budget studio IG production.
The Deer King has similarities to Princess Mononoke, you have deer, wolves and dark goo effects that mark the spread of a deadly disease. Although The Dear King has its origins from a fantasy novel series, not the director’s own origin story. Such elements are not new to folk tales.
The film features a plethora of characters, all of whom feel like they have their own back story and can easily be expanded into something else and this adds to the storytelling. Normally I complain about a movie being too long, but I can happily watch 30 minutes of adventure in this world. It yearns for even more detail and expansion.
The world we are invited to in The Dear King is rich and expansive, in which our world is built. Aquafa is similar to rural agricultural countries, with Mongolian notes, while Zol gives the impression of a vast and emerging empire.
If you want something with some action, adventure and some interesting characters then Dear King movie is worth watching. It’s not a new title, but it achieves what it wants to do. This production IG. Another great action and adventure from
